Ziga Takes Third in 5,000-Meter
March 16, 2007 WILMINGTON, N.C. - Competing in their first meet of the outdoor season, Karen Ziga and Alyssa Catalano combined for seven team points to leave F&M in fifth place at the end of the first day at the North Carolina-Wilmington Invitational. Ten teams are competing on both the men's and women's sides. F&M's men did not score any points through the two completed events. Ziga took third in the 5,000-meter run clocking a 19:13.69. John Carroll's Tricia Stege won the race with a time of 18:29.93, followed by UNC-Wilmington's Bernadette O'Neill (18:44.60). None of the other seven finishers came in under 20 minutes. Catalano took eighth in the hammer throw with a hurl of 39.34 meters. It was the top throw for a non-Division I entrant. Buffalo's Sarah Vance won the throw posting a 54.44 mark. For the men, Pavel Marossine placed tenth in the 5,000 logging a time of 16:22.20. It was the second best finish for a Division III runner. John Carroll's Chris Kempf took second place in 15:31.92, crossing 11.81 seconds behind winner Aaron Kolk of UNC-Wilmington. Competition resumes tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m., beginning with the men's and women's long jump. |
