Diplomats Postcard - Lauren Wasp
Aug. 14, 2007
Name: Lauren Wasp Q: Everyone walks into a new situation with some preconceived notions about what's to come. Which of your preconceptions was the most accurate? LW: Before I came to Australia, I kept telling myself that everyone was in my same situation and was afraid of not knowing what to expect. When I first arrived, it was clearly evident that everyone was scared and I was not alone. Q: Which was entirely inaccurate? LW: To be honest, I did not really have many preconceived notions. I was not sure what to expect, I just went forward with an open mind and did not thing too far ahead. Q: Describe the defining moment of your experience thus far. LW: The most defining moment was last week when I sky dived over the Great Barrier Reef. There was a sixty second free fall in which I was just flying down looking over the most beautiful waters. All I was thinking to myself was how much I have changed and how lucky I am to be doing everything I ever dreamt of. Q: What difficulties have you encountered in your day-to-day life abroad? What strategies have you developed to overcome them? LW: The biggest difficulty by far is missing home. There are some moments when you just want to talk to someone but the time change is so different you just have to suck it up. Now, every time I miss home I just look around at the beautiful country and keep telling myself how lucky I am and that time will fly. It has worked so far! Q: What one aspect of life in your country of study would you most like to bring back to the United States? Why? LW: In Australia, everyone is so laid back. Often times, the Aussies just laugh at the Americans that are in a rush or that are two worried about small things. I would love for the United States to be more like this because it creates a more friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Q: What was the best and the worst of the local cuisine you have had so far? LW: The best I would say is the cereal. The cereal they have here is delicious and very healthy. The worst I would say is vegemite. It is a spread you put on toast....disgusting! Q: What one place have you been in your country that others must see? LW: You must see everything! However, the Great Barrier Reef is gorgeous. Q: How have you been received by the local population? LW: I think I fit in pretty well. I don't get all of the jokes that the locals say because they are very sarcastic but I am easy going and relaxed. Q: What do you miss most about life back on campus? LW: I miss my friends back on campus the most of course. I also miss the guidance of professors. The university I am studying at is huge and hard to figure out. Q: Be honest, how much time do you spend a week instant messaging? LW: I do not have Internet access except for two days a week and most of the time I am traveling, so honestly, not much time at all. Q: Have you played or have you seen any field hockey played over there? If so, what differences do you see in the local approach to the game? LW: I have played pick up field hockey so it was not very intense, however, I have noticed they are very skilled and serious about their athletics.
