Millersville Wins Rupp Cup

Feb. 22, 2008

LANCASTER, Pa. - Cross-town rivals Franklin & Marshall and Millersville squared off Friday evening for the first Rupp Cup trophy. The visiting Marauders (5-11-1) walked off with six of the eight bouts wrestled and the new trophy honoring Theodore Rupp '34, a former Diplomat wrestler who coached both of the match's combatants in his career.

Millersville utilized back-to-back pins at 141 and 149 to blow the barn doors off of the match. Mike Greck (17-17) pinned the Diplomats' (6-8) Akio Aida (1-10) late in the second period. That was followed by Cody Becker's (25-15) first period pin of Al Gianforti (10-11). Wins in the next two weight classes took the match out of doubt for the Marauders.

Millersville snuck away with the first match of the night. F&M's Stephen Sabreen (5-11) held a 2-1 lead in the matches closing seconds, but a quick shot by John Andel (12-20) brought F&M's freshman to the mat with eight seconds left to make it 3-2. Andel's accumulated riding time made it the 4-2 final.

Jake Bucha (17-9) got the Diplomats on the board with a 19-6 major decision of Matt Leggett (3-8). Bucha recorded four takedowns in each of the last two periods, while all six of Legget's points came via escape.

The 174-pound bout witnessed the night's most exciting finish. Justin Herbert (24-2) appeared to be in danger of being stuck on a shot-scramble, but managed to reverse the situation to pin Jeremy Brooks (14-15) with 36 seconds showing in the opening period. The pin was Herbert's 15th of the season, and 12th in the first period.

Franklin & Marshall wrapped its regular season at 6-9. The Diplomats are idle until the 104th EIWA Championships roll into the Mayser Center on March 8-9.
