Men's Soccer Rolls Past DeSales

Sept. 2, 2007

Box Score

CARLISLE, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall sophomore Matt Melino netted the first game-winning goal of his career in the 13th minute of Sunday's 4-0 win over DeSales (0-2) at the Dickinson Invitational. His goal got F&M to 2-0 on the season, marking the Diplomats' best start in the new millennium. It also sealed the Dickinson Invitational Championship for F&M.

Melino intercepted a pass and sent the ball home from 30-yards out at the 12:31 mark. Sixteen minutes later seniors Ryan McGonigle and Chris Walters conspired for a goal for the second time in as many days. McGonigle buried Walters' cross from six-yards out to make it 2-0. McGonigle scored the only goal in Saturday's win over Arcadia.

Prior to the break, 2006 First Team All-American, Brandon Corday, found twine for the first time this season. F&M held a 3-0 advantage at the half. The Diplomats' added the fourth and final goal late in the second half. A nifty Melino pass made its way to the foot of Brian Homer-Gunther, who finished one-on-one with the keeper for his first of the year. The helper was the first of Melino's career.

Freshman keeper, Zack Zamek, made six saves for the Diplomats to record his second consecutive shutout.

With the win, Franklin & Marshall starts the season at 2-0. The Diplomats are idle until Friday evening when F&M will face Hampden-Sydney at the Elizabethtown Invitational.
