Bears Edge Men's Lacrosse In CC Action
March 22, 2008
LANCASTER, Pa. - Eric Farris and Justin Reinke each tallied three goals, while Tony Aquilino made nine saves to lead Ursinus over Franklin & Marshall 11-8 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday. Farris scored on two man-up opportunities and Reinke struck back-to-back goals to help the Bears (4-3, 2-0 CC) take a 6-1 lead early in the third quarter and hold on for their second conference win. Sean Oliver led the Diplomats (4-2, 0-1 CC) with three goals, while Mark Hild added a goal and assisted on three others. Down 7-2 in the third quarter, F&M scored the next five out of seven goals to get within two with 5:46 remaining in the game. Oliver and Peter Moon scored a goal apiece less than a minute to start the rally. Shane Brennan assisted Moon on the extra-man goal. Farris put Ursinus ahead 8-4 with his third goal, but Oliver took advantage of an Ursinus penalty at the 11:36 mark of the final quarter and John Short finished off a pass from Hild to make it 8-6. Just when the Diplomats got close, the Bears found a way fire back. Just 14 seconds after Short's goal, Reinke struck again to keep a three-goal lead. Hild found Brendan Kearney two minutes later, but Derrin Mangin scored immediately after the face-off for the 10-7 edge. Both teams exchanged one more goal, with Ursinus getting the final one with 18 seconds left to defeat F&M for the second straight year. The Diplomats held a 12-10 advantage in face-offs and 30-29 edge in shots. Chris Marcozzi recorded eight saves in the net and Brett Leppert added a goal for F&M. The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday at Swarthmore. Game time is 7 p.m. |
