ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. - Chuck Anttonen shot a 78 at the first round of the 2008 Centennial Conference Men's Golf Championships on Friday. His six shots over par leaves Franklin & Marshall's top finisher in a four-way tie for third place with two rounds of competition remaining at The Bridges Golf Club in Abbotstown.

Franklin & Marshall's title defense did not get underway as planned. The Diplomats are in fifth place amongst the seven competing teams and need to make up 16 strokes on first place Muhlenberg over the final pair of rounds. The Mules Bill Snow is tied with Gettysburg's Jim LeClair for the individual lead. Both are one stroke over par with a round in the book.

The Mules have two additional golfers, Zachary Oyer and Biff Slocum, in the top ten. They are both tied for seventh along with Anttonen and McDaniel's Gerry Butler. Muhlenberg posted a team score of 304, followed by McDaniel at 311 and Gettysburg at 314. Dickinson turned in a 319 to hold a one-stroke edge on F&M.

Joseph Fucigna carded an 80 (+8) for the Diplomats ending a string of six consecutive rounds in the 70's. His effort leaves him tied with Dickinson's Alex Cameron and McDaniel's Zach LaVoie for 14th place. Randy Boll and Andrew Woods each shot an 81 (+9) to make up half of the golfers tied in 18th place. Steve Colalillo is in a three-way tie for 22nd place with an 82 (+10), rounding out the F&M contingent.

Competition resumes Saturday morning at The Bridges.
